International Women’s Day 2022

On this International Women’s Day, the Alliance for Integrity celebrates the inspiring women who, in the struggle against corruption are striving for business integrity around the world. Although women are affected differently by corruption than men, we are not seeing ourselves as victims – we feel empowered, because we are the essential part of the solution.

Women are everyday providing a guiding light for the world in addressing issues of corruption. The network of the Alliance for Integrity is full of such women, from entrepreneurs and business leaders to representatives of international organizations. They are reminding us how crucial it is to include the critical perspective of women in efforts to encourage integrity and prevent corruption. These diligent and committed women are at the forefront of many of our achievements.

With their cooperation, Alliance for Integrity has developed a wide range of services to promote gender-sensitive corruption prevention in business, empowering other women entrepreneurs to fight corruption. Our initiative also brings together international actors to create synergies to mainstream gender equality in our activities, while engaging policymakers to develop necessary framework conditions to address the gender dimension in anti-corruption policies.

COVID-19 has increased compliance risks in business and other impacts of the pandemic have seen developments towards gender equality pushed back. In pursuing due diligence practices that will help organisations build back better, recovery efforts must overturn the inequalities that hold women back. Together, the Alliance for Integrity, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), United Nations Development Programme FairBiz, World Economic Forum (WEF), and other actors including the U4 Anti-Corruption Resource Centre and multinational corporations have convened a platform of collaboration to work with Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) to pursue the transformative changes that will bring about a gendered perspective to preventing and fighting corruption.

It is our firm conviction that reforming systems for gender equality paves the way for changing social norms and actions. The result of these efforts is not only women’s empowerment and men assuming responsibility in promoting equal opportunities, but also a more resilient economy and stable society.
