Pretoria (South Africa)

Alliance for Integrity’s trainer network is growing: In South Africa, the first group of trainers has completed their training. Alongside with the GIZ office in South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini as well as GIZ’s Transparency, Integrity and Accountability Programme (TIP), Alliance for Integrity co-hosted a Train the Trainers (ToT) business integrity course for ethics and integrity professionals in Pretoria on 7 and 8 November. It was the very first of its kind in the country.

The training equipped compliance integrity professionals with a comprehensive training methodology to pass on learnings for establishing and implementing compliance management systems within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are particularly vulnerable to corruption. The workshop focused on practical, resource-efficient approaches that SMEs can seamlessly integrate for effective compliance management. This ensures they benefit from anti-corruption practices and implement industry best practices. The new trainers were also encouraged to address grey areas in policies and customary business practices.

The participants were very appreciative of the training content and methodology and the need for such training especially for the SMEs. They also highlighted the rampant corruption in the society and a couple of major corruption scandals related revelations that came out of the recent commission of enquiry into allegations of state capture.

The recent activities resulted in the initial phase of establishing a network of ethics trainers in South Africa. In collaboration with TIP, Alliance for Integrity is now active in South Africa. The training not only identified future trainers, but also created a platform for SMEs to share their own unique experiences in their daily operations as well as insights on corruption requirements and risks. At the end of the session, they also see new opportunities to grow their businesses without being involved in corrupt practices. TIP has recognized the need to support SMEs and has identified the Alliance for Integrity network as a channel to achieve this objective. There are plans in place for the second workshop in early 2024.
