How Fighting Corruption can Strengthen Female Entrepreneurship (European Development Days 2019)

To date, women face discrimination concerning the division of labour, access to resources and economic opportunities. Due to their role in society and gendered forms of authority, women may also be more vulnerable to an additional barrier: corruption. Practical experience shows that corruption affects women differently to men. As entrepreneurs engaged in micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, women frequently face demands for bribes. Corruption still acts as a barrier that prevents women from setting up their own businesses or pursuing their careers. Hence, fighting corruption plays an important role in strengthening female entrepreneurship and inclusive growth. Experience from Indonesia and Latin America shows that there is high demand for gender-specific measures that help to empower women to engage in their role as entrepreneurs or employees, this Brainstorming Lab seeks to find answer to some of the following questions:
  • How can we identify vulnerabilities of women?
  • How can we bring women together to talk about their experiences and coping strategies?
  • How can we mainstream and leverage gender in the fight against corruption?

Session type:
