The Alliance for Integrity and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH hosted a joint panel discussion at the OECD Integrity Forum 2016. In the frame of this year`s overall topic “Global Trade without Corruption”, the discussion focused on the topic “Corruption as an impediment to Doing Business in South America”.

The panel consisted of the following participants:

  • Carlos Casto, Chairman of the Board of Sancor Seguros;
  • Renato de Oliveira Capanema, Director of Integrity, International Cooperation and Agreements of the Office of the Comptroller General of Brazil;
  • Ana Paula Fernandez del Castillo Quintana, Ambassador of the UNGC Local Network in Mexico;
  • Joachim Fritz, Director of the Sector Department Governance and Conflict, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH;
  • and Donia Hammami, Head of Customs & Trade Facilitation, International Chamber of Commerce (ICC).

The discussions highlighted how corruption impacts the private sector in Latin America and how it effects doing business, foreign trade and foreign direct investment. The result-oriented panel then focused on the important role of the private sector and stressed how it could and should play a principal role in fostering and strengthening clean and ethical business practices in emerging markets. One conclusion, amongst others, was that trust is a key basis for enhancing cooperation and that open communication between all relevant actors therefore needs to be increased.
