Integrity Week Indonesia - What is in it for Indonesian Business?

The Alliance for Integrity organised its 2nd Integrity Week in Indonesia between 8 and 10 August in Jakarta. The Integrity Week brought together relevant stakeholders from different sectors to develop practical solutions and share knowledge and good practice on compliance and business integrity. Three major events were organised throughout the week. A Dari Usaha Ke Usaha (DUKU) Compliance Training Programme with an introductory panel discussion on 8 August, a Peer–to- Peer Exchange on 9 August 2017 and an Integrity Forum “Promoting Business by Promoting Integrity” part of which was the launch of the Indonesian “No eXcuses Guide” on 10 August 2017.

A DUKU training session marked the kick-off of the Integrity Week Indonesia. This was organised by the Alliance for Integrity in cooperation with the National Entrepreneurs Network (Jaringan Pengusaha Nasional - JAPNAS), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Indonesia and the Paramadina University. Ayu Dwi Nindyati, Vice-Rector of Paramadina University delivered a welcome speech. Following the speech, Ariz Arham from the Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission (Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi - KPK) presented the Graft Agency’s latest measures and initiatives regarding corruption prevention in the private sector. After KPK’s presentation, a panel discussion on “The Importance of Compliance and Business Integrity in Today’s Business” was held. The panel was moderated by Yusuf Kurniadi, lecturer on anti-corruption at Paramadina University, who was joined by Ilham A. Habibie, Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Indonesia, Jeffrey Cheung, Chair of the Alliance for Integrity’s Advisory Group Indonesia and Roelof Lamberts, President Director and CEO PT Mercedes-Benz Distribution Indonesia. The panelists shared the view that compliance and integrity are a necessity in today’s business world and should be seen as measures to increase the competitive advantage and to attract more foreign investment into Indonesia. Afterwards, they shared their own experiences on the issues, providing diverse and interesting insights. The following DUKU training was facilitated by Miranda Andamsari from Merck Group Indonesia, Ranny Fathia from PT Siemens Indonesia, Yanto Sidik from Indonesia Business Links and Arie Hamzah, an entrepreneur. The trainers shared their knowledge and experience regarding compliance and anti-corruption with the 29 participants consisting of entrepreneurs and representative of companies.

On Wednesday, 9 August, eleven selected participants consisting of entrepreneurs, representatives of SMEs and larger companies gathered at PT. Siemens Indonesia to participate in a peer-to-peer exchange. Gilang Hermawan, General Counsel of PT Siemens Indonesia as host of the event, welcomed the participants. This was followed by presentations from Gunawan from PT Siemens Indonesia and Miranda Andamsari from Merck Group Indonesia, who both introduced their companies’ compliance systems and shared practical knowledge on the importance of compliance management systems with the participants. In the following discussions, the participants raised numerous questions and were eager to learn. Key topics were challenges and opportunities in the implementation of compliance management systems and the topic of business partner management.
The following day, the Integrity Week came to its highlight with an Integrity Forum on the topic “Strengthening Compliance and Integrity: What is in it for Indonesian Business?” The Forum was inaugurated by Deniz Sertcan, Counsellor for Development Cooperation at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany to Indonesia. In his speech, he strongly encouraged the Indonesian stakeholders, especially local companies, to join this initiative.

Afterwards, Jeffrey Cheung, Chairman of the Alliance for Integrity’s Advisory Group in Indonesia addressed the audience. On the following panel, Pahala Nainggolan, Deputy of Prevention at KPK, Collie F. Brown, Country Manager Indonesia and Liaison to ASEAN at UNODC, Heru Prasetyo, Chairman of the Board of Patrons of the Indonesia Business Links, and Dadang Trisasongko, Secretary General of Transparency International Indonesia discussed recent changes in Indonesian legislation regarding corporate liability and reflected on resulting challenges and opportunities. They were joined by Siddharta Moersjid, Head of Standing Committee for Social Responsibility at the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and debated the current situation of business integrity in Indonesia from their organisations’ viewpoints. Towards the end of the discussion they came up with ideas on how the private sector could tackle new requirements in order to reap the benefits of compliance and business integrity.. After the high-level panel discussion, the Indonesian version of the No eXcuses Guide was launched by Barliana Amin, Network Manager Indonesia at the Alliance for Integrity.

After the lunch break, the Alliance for Integrity in cooperation with Indonesia Business Links held a joint session on the topic of “Strengthening Integrity on Procurement in Health Sector: Creating Mutual Benefit for All Stakeholders”. This session was moderated by Mohamad Fahmi, Executive Director at Indonesia Business Links. He was joined by Engko Sosialine, Director of Public Drugs Administration, Indonesian Ministry of Health, Ners Purwadi, Head of Health Care Equipment Department, Public Health Office Jakarta, Muhammad Qadr Siddiq Zam, Directorate for Development of Catalogue System, National Public Procurement Agency, and Siti Juliantari Rachman, Coordinator Campaign Division of Indonesia Corruption Watch. The discussion focused on the current state of e-procurement in the national health care sector and it was mentioned that there were still remaining integrity challenges - both in the public as well as private sector for transparent implementation all over the country. An open and transparent dialogue between the relevant stakeholders could be a possible solution to promote integrity in the sector, so is information sharing.

In the afternoon, an open stakeholder meeting was held where the team of the Alliance for Integrity gathered valuable input from various stakeholders who are engaged in the initiative in Indonesia. Nandini Sharma, Alliance for Integrity’s Network Manager India, gave an overview of ongoing activities in India and encouraged regional cooperation and sharing of knowledge and good practice.
After the Integrity Forum, the Alliance for Integrity held a train-the-trainer workshop and the inaugural meeting of the Women Entrepreneurs and Professionals Working Group in Bandung, West Java.
