Integrity and Human Rights in the Supply Chain: Conference on the occasion of the International Anti-Corruption Day 2017

On the occasion of the international Anti-Corruption-Day, which is celebrated annually on 9 December, the Alliance for Integrity, in cooperation with the Alliance for Sustainable Textiles, the German Global Compact Network and the German Institute for Human Rights, hold the event "Integrity and human rights in the supply chain. The first part of the event focused on the topic of “One Year National Action Plan” and was organised by the German Global Compact Network and the German Institute for Human Rights. The afternoon was organised by the Alliance for Integrity in cooperation with the Alliance for Sustainable Textiles and the German Global Compact Network and was dedicated to the topic of "Corruption prevention in the supply chain". The asked questions focused on how companies can deal with the challenges arising in the supply chain. The highlight of the afternoon was the launch of a new guide with the title: Prevention of corruption in the supply chain. How companies can deal with challenges.

The first part of the event was opened by Marcel Engel, Secretariat of the German Global Compact Network and Folke Kayser, German Institute for Human Rights, which both welcomed the numerous guests and gave a brief introduction of the day. Following this, Sylvia Schenk, Transparency International Germany presented her experiences for the human rights debate in a keynote speech. The ensuing panel discussion on the European perspective of human rights was joined on the panel by Kevin O'Neill, BBC Worldwide, Michael Windfuhr, Sylvia Schenk, and Elsa Savourey, Herbert Smith Freehills Paris LLP. The group was moderated by Steve Gibbons, Ergon Associates. After a short coffee break, two parallel workshops were held on the topics of "Sustainable Public Procurement" and "Implementation of the National Action Plan".

Noor Naqshbandi, Alliance for Integrity opened the afternoon programme together with Christian Wollnik, Secretariat for Sustainable Textiles. Immediately after, the highlight of the day followed; the new guide: Corruption prevention in the supply chain. How companies can deal with challenges. The guide was briefly presented to the audience and its development process was described.

Since April 2017, representatives from the private sector and civil society had worked together as part of a group of experts in a consulting process that lasted several months. The final guide is divided into two parts, offering both companies that have not yet been deeply involved in the prevention of corruption in their own supply chain, as well as those who are already engaged in the process, appropriate measures. For the subsequent panel discussion, some members of the expert group were won to speak in front of the audience. Dr Christa Dürr, Transparency International Germany, Dr. Cornelia Godzierz , Linde AG; Dr Philip Matthey, MAN SE and German Institute for Compliance (DICO) as well as Christoph Wenk-Fischer, German E-Commerce and Distance Selling Trade Association discussed the creation of the guide as well as corruption prevention in the supply chain under the moderation of Noor Naqshbandi. With their expert knowledge they were able to give exciting information to the entire audience, which than took advantage of the opportunity and asked the experts further questions.

Following the plenary session, the participants were able to participate in two separate workshops on a smaller scale. The first workshop was moderated by Sebastian Wegner, Humboldt-Viadrina Governance Platform, dealt with the topic of corruption prevention in the supply chain and its most common challenges. Together with the participating participants, Diana Okl, MAN SE and Otto Geiß, German Network Business Ethics, conducted the main challenges and gave possible solutions with their expert knowledge. The second workshop was on the subject of digitisation and prevention of corruption. Under the moderation of Florian Lair, Alliance for Integrity, Alexander Geschonneck, KPMG and Andreas Pyrcek, EY Ernst & Young as speakers, together with the participants, have had a cutting-off exchange on possibilities of digitisation. Following the workshops, the results were presented to the entire plenary.
