Alliance for Integrity and GIZ host session at the European Development Days 2019

How can fighting corruption contribute to strengthening female entrepreneurship? This question took centre stage in the Brainstorming Lab at the European Development Days 2019 in Brussels on 19 June 2019, organised by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the GIZ Sector Programme on Anti-Corruption and Integrity, and the Alliance for Integrity. The session featured three experts from different regions that all focus in their work on the nexus gender and integrity. Joachim Goeske, Head of the Department Global Policy and Governance at GIZ, moderated the session.

The Brainstorming Lab is part of a series of global engagements on how the three speakers addressed different aspects of the topic in a ‘world café’-style discussion.

Deladwita Suyoso, Indonesia Global Compact Network (IGCN), managed the table on the relation between social and cultural gender equality and female entrepreneurship.

Clara Machado, winner of the Alliance for Integrity and W20 joint Written Contest on Gender and Integrity, subsequently shed a light on the root causes for gendered corruption.

As a graduate student of the College of Literature, Science and Arts at the University of Michigan, she covered the academic perspective on the link between gender and corruption.

Moving from a root cause analysis to solutions, Silvina Coria, Global Director of Risk & Controls at OLX Naspers Classifieds, debated with participants strategies and good practices to tackle gendered corruption in practice. A fourth discussion roundtable focused on men and their role in the nexus gender and integrity. This table was facilitated by GIZ staff Florian Stolpe and Florian Lair.

The European Development Days is Europe's leading forum on development issues, organised by the European Commission. By bringing the development community together, the forum provides a place of sharing ideas and experiences for hot debated topics in the respective field.
