Hamburg, Germany

Just a few days before the start of the G20 Summit 2017 the Alliance for Integrity participated in the 5th Viadrina Compliance Congress in Hamburg together with partners like the Business 20 Dialogue or the Deutsches Institut für Compliance (DICO) e.V.. The Congress focused on the topic “Compliance Across the Globe”. As a conference partner of the Viadrina Compliance Centre and the Compliance Academy, the Alliance for Integrity was first invited to share welcome remarks with the audience. Around 100 international participants from the private sector, public institutions as well as civil society organisations and academia convened to exchange good practice examples and discuss topics such as sustainable compliance culture and international trade compliance. The key notes during the event dealt with the topics of “Rewarding Compliance as a game changer in the fight against corruption – the B20 recommendations” or “How ethics can support effective compliance and anti-corruption programs” amongst others.

The Alliance for Integrity organized and moderated the conference’s closing panel on “Compliance in and for Africa – culture of integrity as a chance for sustainable and stable African entrepreneurship”. The topic of the panel reflected that under the German G20 Presidency, a key focus is the partnership with Africa. In this context, Dr. Stefan Liebing, Chairman of the German-African Business Association, held the keynote speech at the beginning of the panel. He stressed the potential of the African market and shared thoughts and suggestions how to solve compliance challenges jointly with all partners in order to foster investment from the German private sector in African countries.

Mr. Noor Naqschbandi, Director, Alliance for Integrity, then moderated the panel session and was joined by Linda Ofori-Kwafo, Executive Director at Ghana Integrity Initiative. She stressed the fact that African countries already have a set of values and that it is very important to enforce existing rules and regulations and to strengthen accountability of different stakeholders. Meinhard Remberg, Executive Vice President at SMS GmbH, shared from a private sector perspective challenges and best practices when operating in African countries. In this context he highlighted the importance of supporting small and medium sized enterprises. Tom Brown, CEO at Kaizen Compliance Solutions, shared many already existing good examples and success stories for business opportunities in Africa. The panelists discussed how to build trust between all stakeholder groups and the relevance of public sector institutions when it comes to corruption prevention in the private sector. They all agreed that the perception of corruption does not always reflect reality. It is also important to share more of the already existing success stories.
